LEVERAGING A CRISIS INTO A TRANSFORMATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE MOVEMENT
Our work has focused on introducing important measures that address racial inequities in the judicial system, specifically engaging AAPI, Latino, and Spanish-speaking communities.
THE CHALLENGE
As the nation reels from historic protests against police brutality and legislation turn against criminalization and towards justice, storytelling and community partnerships are essential to moving forward meaningful reform and narrative shift.
WHAT WE DID
Tzunu has focused on building strategic partnerships with community-based organizations, news outlets, and advocacy groups to ensure the passage of justice-driven legislation and tell the stories of formerly incarcerated individuals looking for a second chance (and sometimes a first).
RESULTS
From the passage of Measure R in Los Angeles County to responding to anti-Blackness in media coverage and elevating the voices of Latinos impacted by the War on Drugs, Tzunu's criminal justice portfolio has brought together media, policy, and community to create an ecosystem of information access.
POLICY ADVOCACY
Measure R is now understood to be one of the most important Sheriff oversight bills in the country, it has strengthened the Civilian Oversight Commission and has set the foundation for strengthening statewide legislation.
